DNA AND ME
So what does this have to do with health and wellness? Each of us has a family tree that can be tracked based on our own DNA. Of course, we all know that we can use the family Bibles and other available records. What if you were adopted. Let me tell you the story of my sister, Pam and I.
In February of 2019, I received a message from my cousin concerning a contact she had through Ancestry.com. This is a service that uses DNA to connect people with their own personal history. Carrie asked some questions that had been forwarded to her from this individual. When I read the questions I knew that the only possible connections to this person were my parents.
Pam and I are brother and sister. She carries the DNA of Margaret and Bob Ralston, our parents. Now, what is the rest of the story I am trying to tell? Each of us inherited a genetic code that tells us who we are going to be in so many different ways. One of the most important pieces of personal information that you can have is your genetic code.
Why? If you know what your code is saying about your health you can work to make the changes in your life that will prolong a give you a long healthy life.
My mother passed away in 1988 from the complications of lung cancer. My father passed away from an infection caused during surgeries dealing with polyps in his intestine that were giving signs of being cancerous. For my brother, my sisters, and myself this is something we need to pay attention to in our health journey. My mother had varicose veins that were very significant. I had the first one show up on my body when I was 18 years old. My mother also had a multiple bypass six years before she was taken by cancer. Heart disease, circulatory issues, lung cancer and intestinal issues are in our DNA. Each of us in my family have these indications from our family history. Each of us can now look at our DNA and possibly make the changes in our lives to impact the possibility of any of these health problems.
DNA and me and you is something to be very aware of…
